Hollow Knight: Silksong Broke Storefronts on Release
Since its release last week, the only game on anyone’s mind is the massively popular Hollow Knight: Silksong. After over 7 years of development (and an insane amount of hype), many were waiting for the exact second the game was set to drop to pick it up. Across Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo storefronts, it seems that the flood of players caused such a strain on resources that led to some long waiting times and even crashes.
The most prominent of these was on the PlayStation Store- which saw the game inaccessible for over an hour after it was set to launch. At one point, the game was even removed from the storefront entirely (likely to fix some issues with the massive amounts of traffic flocking to the page. Steam was also experiencing crashes and slow loading times- only made worse by the fact that the game couldn’t be pre-downloaded. This means all players were trying to both buy and download the game at the exact same time.
Of course, with such a massive level of popularity, Hollow Knight: Silksong has already sold phenomenally. Based on SteamDB chart figures, the game has reached a peak concurrent player number of over 500,000- placing it in the top 20 most played games on the storefront of all time. With these numbers only reflecting players of the game on Steam, its likely that Hollow Knight’s successor will easily become the best selling indie release of the year.
Although there have been some comments on the game’s difficulty, its clear that Hollow Knight: Silksong is already a resounding success with a very positive rating on Steam and a massive playerbase currently making their way through Pharloom. You can pick it up now on all platforms for around £17.
