Final Fantasy XIV Could Be Reaching PS4 Limits

Naoki Yoshida, the producer of MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has indicated that the PlayStation 4 version of the game could soon be unsupported. The game would likely still run as normal but would miss out on the major content drops that the PS5, Xbox Series and PC versions of the game will continue to receive. Yoshida cited data limits when explaining why the PS4 version was reaching its maximum capacity. Speaking on it in an interview with Sector.sk, he said the following:

“These regulations are related to the limit of the data, and because there’s that limit of the data, well, we are continually incorporating updates for Final Fantasy 14 and we are now approaching that limit.”

This news comes after a trend of other developers who will no longer be supporting the PS4 versions of their online games in the coming months. This includes PUBG and Genshin Impact. Neither of these will be playable on last gen hardware past April of next year. Although no concrete announcement has been made regarding if Final Fantasy XIV will follow in their footsteps, its looking more and more likely given the industry trend.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Final Fantasy XIV has seen platforms end support. The PS3 version of the game was no longer supported after 2017 with the major drop ‘Stormblood’. This was four years after the PS4 was released so, with it now being five years since the PS5 dropped, we could see Final Fantasy XIV become a current-gen only game in the next year or so. This will likely coincide with the next major update to the game. Until then, you can continue to play FFXIV on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series consoles and PC.
