Metaphor: ReFantazio Reaches 2 Million Sales
In a now-removed meeting document, Sega has accidentally leaked just how many units Metaphor: ReFantazio has sold since launch. Since the game managed to achieve 1 million games sold on day one, you may expect a much higher one that the reported 2 million according to this document. This puts the game in line with Persona 3 Reload- which sold just over 2 million copies since its release last year.
Despite the mass appeal of these JRPGs, they still operate in quite a small niche within the video games landscape. This is doubly true for Metaphor which relies on players familiar with Persona mechanics as well as having an interest in more grounded fantasy stories with political undertones. Its a much harder sell than the typical JRPG vibe which could explain the game’s less than stellar performance.

Still, the release managed to meet its sales goal so hopefully we see some more stories within this universe since it did manage to create a name for itself. Compared to other leaked games, it managed to sell over double that of Yakuza spin-off ‘The Man Who Erased His Name’ and matched combined copies sold of Shin Megami Tensei: V (including the Vengeance updated version). Still, its come nowhere near the reported 7.25 million copies of Persona 5 Royal sold- cementing just how massive this series is. Strangely enough, recent indie JRPG Expedition 33 has sold 3.33 million in just over a month so there is clearly an audience for turned based RPGs in 2025.
If you wanted to give Metaphor a try but haven’t yet got around to its 100 hour story, its actually now available on Xbox via a Game Pass subscription- definitely worth a try if you think its slow start might put you off. With it maintaining the high bar of quality from Atlus, however, its still one of the best JRPGs in years and is worth taking a look at for all JRPG fans.
