Netflix Greenlights Assassins Creed TV Show

With the resurgence of video game adaptations we’ve seen in recent years, Ubisoft seems to want in. Netflix has reportedly greenlit a full Assassins Creed TV show five years after Ubisoft announced that it would be working with the streaming giant. The show was announced on July 17th with a synopsis promising the classic assassin/templar conflict that fans of the games have grown so accustomed to.

Of course, with the show just being greenlit, any other details have yet to be confirmed. This includes the number of episodes, casting and even the overall plot that the show is set to follow. This makes Assassins Creed for Netflix the second project that we know about in development as a TV show from Ubisoft. The other is a Splinter Cell animated series that is currently being created.

One thing we can be sure of is that the show will likely not follow any of the plot of the 2016 Michael Fassbender-led Assassins Creed film, which was panned by fans and critics upon release. A convoluted plot that failed to follow any of the premises of the videogames and poor writing doomed the movie adaptation to failure. Hopefully, this can serve as a lesson for Netflix as they work on this adaptation.

The show is set to be helmed by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, responsible for Westworld and the less than stellar Halo TV show respectively. Of course, no release date has been announced for this one but, considering how long it takes for a single short season of TV to be released in recent years, this one is still a long ways off.
