Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Launches to Good Reception

The latest game in the surprisingly long running Hyrule Warriors series launched earlier this week and- like most musou games, it received a decent, if not exceptional, rating. Its currently sitting at a strong 79 on Opencritic- the same as its predecessor. The hack and slash subseries of The Legend of Zelda, Hyrule Warriors puts players in the shoes of numerous characters from the series as they partake in what was only backstory to the main games.

With the most recent release ‘Age of Imprisonment’ delves into the backstory of 2023’s ‘Tears of the Kingdom’ much in the same way as ‘Age of Calamity’ did for ‘Breath of the Wild’. This gives players a little bit more story to the relatively bare bones flashbacks seen in Tears of the Kingdom. Unlike its predecessor, however, this is actually a canon story taking place in the Zelda universe- giving it a bit more credibility when it comes to its story.

As for its gameplay, the combat is more of the same according to critics. Defeating hordes of enemies as various Zelda characters is enjoyable but can get repetitive quite quickly. Some iterations have been made but most of the gameplay is similar to its contemporaries- which may be either a good or bad thing depending on your pension for musuo-like games.

While by no means a must buy, ‘Age of Imprisonment’ may be worth picking up if you’re really into the Tears of the Kingdom lore or just want to play something new for your Switch 2 while you wait for grander titles to drop. Either way, its available exclusively for the Switch 2 now.
