Helldivers 2 Gets Shock Xbox Release Date

Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox Series X and S consoles in just under two months in an announcement from Arrowhead- developers of the game. This comes as quite a shock considering the game was previously exclusive to PlayStation and then also PC. It’s also been marketed quite heavily by PlayStation- leading many to believe it would remain exclusive to those platforms until the game’s eventual shutdown.

With the multiplayer online shooter now confirmed for Xbox, however, the first PlayStation owned IP is making its way over to their direct competitor. This was the driving force for why so many believed that the game would never make its way over to Xbox. Microsoft have famously been very lax with their IPs in recent years with first party offerings like Forza, Doom and Indiana Jones all making their way over to the PS5. However, this is an unprecedented move from Sony.

Now does this mean that we’ll see The Last of Us or Horizon: Forbidden West on Xbox consoles any time soon? That’s very unlikely. With Helldivers being an online shooter, it’s a bit of an exception case where Sony would obviously want as big of a player base as possible. That being said, don’t expect Helldivers 2 to be coming to Xbox Game Pass any time ever. The game will be cross-platform, however.

What’s even more of a shock is that Helldivers 2 is set to release on Xbox the same day that Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is set to launch on PlayStation: August 26th. That means that both Sony and Microsoft will be swapping over their IPs on the very same day- with both of those IPs being third person shooters. Make sure to check them both out next month if you’re interested.
