Fans Split on New Plants vs. Zombies Game

Upon its initial reveal, fans were excited but skeptical about the Plants vs. Zombies remake in the form of ‘Replanted’. Although it looked to be a faithful adaptation, it seemed a little bit too faithful at first glance. The upgrade to HD graphics isn’t too noticeable and the additions to the game didn’t seem to be too substantial. Unfortunately, those fears were realized when the game launched last week.

That’s not to say that all reception on the game has been negative; critics and fans have applauded how well the game has held up and the implementation of speed up mechanics and beta features for veteran fans to enjoy. As a result, its currently sitting at a respectable 76 on Opencritic and has landed at an overall mixed reception on Steam. The additional features aren’t enough to offset the negatives this package brings.

Some plants have been altered to look quite a bit worse than the original versions and, whilst the addition of different skins is nice, its not as impactful as many would have hoped for. The new modes based on scrapped ideas are unfinished and even the beta art has been exposed as fake- diminishing this remake’s value for long time fans. A more zoomed out camera may also seem like a good addition initially but it removes a lot of the inherent charm from the original release.

The original Plants vs Zombies is also available on Steam for a much cheaper price point so, if you’re truly clamoring to replay these and aren’t too bothered about upscaled graphics, it may be better to pick up the original Game of the Year version which, for now at least, a lot of fans consider to be the superior version. Either way, Replanted is available now on all major platforms.
